There were 67 riders lined up for the 2005 FEI Blenheim Petplan European Eventing Championships at Blenheim Palace. First run in 1953, 18 countries were represented for the individual title, with 10 nations contesting the team competition.
Many experts expected the German team to come out on top following their heartbreaking disappointment in Athens and they duly led the way after the dressage with Bettina Hoy heading the individual scoreboard with a brilliant 31.3.
Cross country however, has always been Great Britain's strong point and Jeanette Brakewell, William Fox-Pitt and Zara Phillips all went round clear within the time, to set up a commanding lead in the team event, whereas their opponents faltered with Bettina Hoy having an unexpected refusal.
Zara Phillips was representing her country at senior level for the first time; after lying 3rd at the end of dressage, she had to endure monsoon like conditions across country but showing maturity way beyond her years finished clear, 10 seconds inside the time. She then resisted all the pressure on the final day by going clear in the showjumping to take gold 34 years after her mother, the Princess Royal, had won the same title.
