A world-class Liverpool team took on the uncompromising German Champions Borussia Moenchengladbach, led by tough German skipper, Bertie Vogts.

Although Keegan spent much of the game on the floor, Vogts was rarely penalised, and Keegan's dazzling late run into the area put the final nail in the German coffin.

In his last Liverpool game, Keegan showed how to lead the line with courage, energy and skill as Liverpool won 3–1 to win their first European Cup a year after they had won the UEFA Cup. This meant that Bob Paisley became the first manager to win the UEFA Cup and the European Cup in two successive seasons.

Paisley's all-conquering Reds paid the ultimate tribute to the legacy of those great Shankly years.

Surprisingly the game was poorly attended with over 30,000 empty places, although around 30,000 fans travelled to the game from Liverpool, some in all night trains.

Liverpool's win was the first of 6 successive English winners of the European Cup.
