Carnforth

With over 150 passenger, parcels and empty stock workings and more than 80 freight workings in a normal day the West Coast Main Line station at Carnforth was certainly a great place for watching trains. Many freights were routed into the extensive loop systems to allow faster trains to overtake as well as allowing crew and engine changes to take place.

In this programme you will see some of the continuous freight activity, which occurred in the miles of sidings, together with express passenger and fully braked goods trains passing through Carnforth. Then, travelling up the WCML by train the railway scene from Preston to Carnforth is shown as it was in the early 1960s. This is followed by journeys to Morecambe, Heysham and Wennington, plus views of local services from Barrow and Windmere, all filmed between 1961 and 1968.
