The Beth Chatto Gardens in Essex were built out of a wasteland through years of experimentation. Staffed by local families and sustained by a nursery, they have become world famous. This programme explores Beth's philosophy and her unique arrangements of unusual plants beautifully exhibited in the conditions that suit them best. It also illustrates her most recent works - a stunning un-irrigated gravel garden, and a new woodland garden.
Most gardeners face the same problems as Beth Gardens - maintaining the appearance of a garden as the climate and seasons change. Beth's commentary provides a seasonal guide to this fine balance between natural and nurtured gardening, while the beauty of her creation speaks for itself in its grand vistas and detailed corners.
Beth Chatto won ten consecutive gold medals at the Chelsea Flower Show and holds the RHS Victoria Medal of Honour. In this programme, she and her staff share their knowledge with anyone wanting to draw on the experience of creating a modern garden.
