This 1976 programme from the BBC's "World About Us" series shows the grandeur of the American grain harvest.

It features Dale and Margie Starks, their nine Massey-Ferguson combines and the temporary crews who work their way north with seven months of contract cutting.

At the start of the season, they rumble down from their base camp in Oklahoma to Texas where they start harvesting. Mid-summer finds the crews in Kansas where we learn more about their catering and domestic arrangements as well as the Chevrolet and Ford trucks hauling the wheat to the elevators. In Montana the men put in long hours, working through the night.

At the end of the season the machines are harvesting windrowed canary seed in Saskatchewan. When the first snows fall it's time to head south for home again.

Director/Producer Tim Slessor tells the complete story, supported by memorable aerial shots, archive footage and evocative music.
