Carlisle, a major railway centre on the West Coast Main Line, was a fascinating place in the early sixties and this programme shows the area before the DMU and main line diesel arrived in force. With extensive coverage of the station and locomotive depots as well as the trains approaching Carlisle, all sizes of steam engines are represented. Additionally, trips on the Silloth and Langholm branches are featured.

In this programme over 160 engines are shown with more than half of them named and as the film progresses the decline of the numerous ex-LMS and ex-LNER classes is recorded.
