Enjoy the atmosphere of a busy regional railway centre in the 1960's as it copes with both passenger and freight traffic, with over 50 steam hauled and 15 diesel hauled trains, many of them with named engines.

The high level of freight traffic resulted in freight workings operating even at weekends and they had to be threaded through holiday and excursion traffic, which was still heavy despite declining passenger numbers. York's freight yards, built to handle the large volumes of freight that used the East Coast Mainline, also appeared busy but in common with passenger services were suffering with increasing competition from road transport.

This programme, filmed between 1959 and 1968, records the decline of steam traction and the emergence of diesel locomotive power, in addition to showing the complicated tractwork and signalling systems that for many years were a major feature at York.
