When Mile Hughes, Hereford's 'Mr Tractor' became President of Hereford Lions Club he decided to raise cash for Macmillan Cancer Relief.

Mike is a director of the Hereford New Holland dealership and a vintage tractor enthusiast, so he set about staging a Tractor Marathon as a novel fund raising event. Alf Morris, Ashley Godsell and Brian Charles of Leominster Vintage Club were recruited to help.

The result was a highly successful 26 mile cross country run from Bowley Court, Bodenham, Leominster on Sunday 29th May 2005. Around 140 tractors were entered ranging from a 1934 Fordson to a brand new John Deere.

When it comes to planning a route for a tractor run then Brian Charles of Leominster Vintage Club probably has no equal. All but a few miles of the 26 mile route were on farm or woodland tracks, across open fields, or through standing crops and with the added bonus of fantastic scenery.

The event raised £2,400 towards the total of £22,000 which Mike finally presented on behalf of Lions Club to Macmillan Cancer Relief, the largest single non corporate amount ever donated to the Hereford branch.
