Highway Heroes Vol 2 is a series of short films about some unique Western Star operators from around Australia who have more than a few things in common.

For starters they are fiercely proud of their Western Star trucks, secondly their operations are amongst some of the harshest in the land.

Thirdly, and arguably most important is the fact that these Western Stars do their jobs day in day out.

Volume 2

The roads in Far North Queensland are arguably some of the toughest in the world and that’s because they’re damn rough with deep river crossings often inhabited by dangerous crocodiles that lurk near the banks, yet for Hintz Livestock Transport and their 6900 Western Star it’s a challenge they face day in day out as we discovered on this run to Riverview Station.

Roger Pink or Pinky as he is known along the Flinder’s Highway had recently taken delivery of a new 4900 Western Star powered by the latest Detroit Diesel 15 litre engineand we joined him on his regular run to deliver three trailers of Jet-A1 fuel to Mt Isa in Western Queensland to see how it performed.

However, along the way we detour off the beaten track and head deep into the notorious Devil’s Triangle with Clark Harland or Cackles as he is known around the traps, on an action packed journey to collect a triple roadtrain load of cattle.

Then we catch up with Peter Buttery who we’d met earlier when he was hooking up his new 4900 Western Star and trailers at the roadtrain assembly area on the western outskirts of Townsville. Peter told us he was heading out to Cannington Mine, a decent day’s drive to the west with three trailers of sulphuric acid and told us to catch up with him if we had time – well we did!
